Coatesville boy’s and girl’s will compete today at the 118th Penn Relays By Dave Conard Sports Editor, CoatesvilleTimes.com
PHILADELPHIA—Every April the very best in track and field make their way to historic Franklin Field to compete in one of the grandest stages in the world, the Penn Relays. Over the first two days of the country’s oldest and one of a kind relay carnival, more than 54,000 track enthusiasts have packed the stands to cheer on favorites.
Olympic greats like Carl Lewis, Usain Bolt, Bruce Jenner, Lauryn Williams and many more have at one point or another competed on the hallowed ground that is the University of Pennsylvania’s home track along with area legends like comedian/actor Bill Cosby who was in attendance Friday and enjoying time in the infield with the middle schools kids from the area.
On Friday morning, the Coatesville ninth grade boys 4 x 100 relay team of Jalen Hudson, Jay Stocker, Austin Shank and Elijah Mithcell got to compete in the Philadelphia area championship and claimed second place with a time of 46.43 finishing only behind Cheltenham.
In the High School 4 x 100 boy’s event, Coatesville finished second in their heat with a time 45.07 which was fast enough to claim 102nd place overall out of more than 350 schools for the team of Isiah Flamer, Daquan Worley, Robert Yancy and Kevin Smith.
On Saturday, the Red Raiders will share the same infield with the very best Olympic hopefuls in the world as the 4 x 400 Ches-Mont race will take place at 12:10 sandwiched between the USA versus the world Distance medley race and the USA vs. the world 4 x 100 men’s and women’s races.
