Letter: Question about military service unanswered

To The Editor,

Letters11This letter is to Bill Dunn of Downingtown in response to his letter entitled “A Different Take on Freedom” I am sorry to say that your letter does not answer the question: Why should African-American, Latino-Americans, middle class and poor Americans serve in the U.S. Armed Services?

I say this because of the serious harm the Tea Party, conservatives, Congressional Republicans, and some state government legislatures are inflict on the American people.

You also mention that my family visit Arlington Cemetery. You say that people in Arlington fought for freedom, justice and equality for all and not just for a certain group and their ideology. In fact, all wars that Americans died in were for freedom, justice, and equality formed around democracy – which we still don’t have. It appears that the mindset of some Republicans, the Tea Party and conservatives want to take us back 300 years to a time of servitude and oppression.

I am a veteran of the U.S. Army as was my father, my son and four uncles. My great-grandfather fought in the Civil War. My mother worked in an ammunition depot in the state of Maryland, like so many other people.

This United States does not belong to a certain group of people: It belongs to all of us.
