Kennett Brewing Company – craft beer, farm fresh dining & local flare

Local owners invite you to ‘stop on by’…

KENNETT SQUARE  –  The Kennett Brewing Company (KBC), quietly tucked away at 109 S. Broad Street, is historic Kennett Square’s latest unique eatery and watering hole.  Locally owned and managed, KBC has the feel of a ‘word of mouth’ destination where visitors get the sense, upon approaching KBC’s nondescript Apple Alley entrance, they might be asked to knock three times and provide a secret password before entering.

Kidding aside, (no special knocking or passwords were required of me), owners Jossie and Mark Osborne say their clientele are required to love great beer, farm fresh gourmet pub food, and have an appreciation for the vibrant energy of Kennett Square.

Once inside, guests chose self-seating at large farm style tables and bar-side seating.  Though, with no reservations accepted and a ‘just stop on by’ atmosphere, farm tables position guests to dine with other friendly patrons from around the area, adding to KBC’s cool vibe.  Visitors will appreciate subtle, unique decor touches including hand-made ceramic pendants, vintage beer tap handles, hand-painted wall art and a copper-topped bar.

Opening KBC was not without investing some serious personal elbow grease. Located in a circa 1920s building that has been re-purposed numerous times, the Osbornes faced installing a new drainage system, electric, plumbing and refinishing floors; often completing the work themselves.  “The community was very supportive,” Jossie explains, “We had visitors nearly daily volunteering to help, donate equipment and cheering us on.  This generosity is an example of the kind of community we are a part of.”

KBC offers, on average, about eight custom brewed beers. “Kennett Square is home to a very sophisticated beer crowd,” says, Mark, “Our most popular ales are the English style, and which can also be the most challenging to brew well.  Right now our Kennett Pale Ale is a top seller.”

What goes with great beer?  Great food, of course.  The Osbornes hired executive chef, Mike Hall, who saw a fantastic opportunity with KBC. “This is not your ordinary pub food,” says Mike,   “Everything is prepared all fresh, all from scratch, and we source from three local farms.”

When Mark develops a new brew, Mike works closely with him to develop unique farm-to-table fresh food options.  “Our food is doing very well,” Mike enthusiastically says, “If I had to pick top sellers right now they’d be our lobster rolls, candied beer pork belly sandwich, nachos for four, and the pulled pork mac and cheese.”

We asked Mike what menu options patrons could look forward to this fall, “Fall is a chef’s favorite time of year; fusing the best of late summer harvest and heartier, creative comfort food dishes.  KBC patrons can expect to see gourmet pot pies, savory soups and hearty stews toward late fall.”

Jossie says, “The best part of this location in town is talking with people; it’s awesome…Sunday nights offer a real community atmosphere, we have lots of families who stop by for Sunday dinner and enjoy our live music…often resulting in sing along sessions. It’s really something special.”  Maintaining their focus on community engagement inspires the Osbornes to regularly support area charitable events and organizations.
