Red Cross & Firefighters install smoke alarms for those in need

COATESVILLE — On Saturday March 23, 2019 Coatesville City Firefighters and volunteers from the American Red Cross teamed up to promote their “Sound the Alarm – Save a Life” event in homes throughout the City.

“On a crisp 30 degree early spring morning these American Red Cross volunteers left the warmth and comfort of their own homes to come here and help make the homes of our residents safer”, said Fire Chief Garry Alderman. Red Cross volunteers teamed up with the City’s Firefighters to install 108 smoke alarms in various locations around town. Not only did American Red Cross provide the Kidde 10-year Lithium Battery Smoke Alarms, but they organized the appointments and helped firefighters install them.

Four teams spread throughout the City and installed smoke alarms in many homes that were equipped with outdated equipment and in some cases no smoke alarms at all. “We made 30 homes much safer today while also engaging our residents in discussion about fire safety including the installation of Carbon Monoxide detectors, home escape plans and other advice, said Battalion Chief Jim Lentz.  For the second year in a row this program has made a tremendously positive impact on our community and we are grateful for this partnership.

Every day an average of seven people are killed in fires within the home, so often because these homes lack working smoke alarms.  This should be a reminder that smoke alarms save lives. Residents in need of smoke detectors should call American Red Cross at 620-533-0496 or e-mail matthew.breidenstein@redcross.org.
