Phoenixville wins certification in sustainability

Phoenixville Borough announced today it is among a select group of high performing municipalities to become certified through the Sustainable Pennsylvania program. Phoenixville is recognized at the bronze level of certification for meeting the program’s rigorous performance criteria, which provides a foundational approach for building communities that thrive.

Sustainable Pennsylvania is managed by the Pennsylvania Municipal League (The League), in partnership with Sustainable Pittsburgh, and is designed for municipalities that are working to save money, conserve resources, and serve vibrant communities. The certification is offered statewide, recognizing boroughs, townships, cities, and home rule communities across the Commonwealth. The League and Sustainable Pittsburgh applaud local governments for their demonstrated commitment and sustainability performance.

In earning the bronze certification, Phoenixville is acknowledged for its progress in such areas as community design and land use, energy efficiency, health and wellness, intergovernmental cooperation, recycling and waste reduction, fiscal controls, and internal management and operations. Details about Phoenixville’s certification performance within these topics can be found at SustainablePA.org.

“This PA Sustainable bronze certification is a testament to the hard work and vision of our entire community. It demonstrates Phoenixville’s commitment to sustainability, resilience, and responsible growth. We are honored to receive this recognition and will continue to prioritize initiatives that improve the quality of life for all our residents while protecting our environment” said Borough Council President Jonathan Ewald. He goes on to say, “This milestone reflects Phoenixville’s dedication to sustainability, but we see it as a foundation, not a finish line. The bronze certification inspires us to aim even higher, fostering innovation and collaboration as we strive for a cleaner, greener, and more vibrant community.”

“We are delighted to see Phoenixville distinguished among local governments that are leading the way in applying sustainability to both their operations and management, as well as, within the community,” said John Brenner, Executive Director of The League.

Sustainable Pennsylvania is intended to bring recognition to municipalities that are implementing the policies and practices of sustainability to advance community and regional prosperity. The program provides strategies, resources, and recognition to municipalities for improving quality of life and expanding opportunities for everyone.

Brian Weiss stated, “As a member of the Phoenixville Borough Council and Chair of the Borough’s Infrastructure, Technology, Transportation, and Sustainability Committee, I am proud to see the Borough of Phoenixville achieve bronze-level certification from the Sustainable Pennsylvania program, a testament to our ongoing efforts to lead in sustainable municipal operations. This recognition reflects our deep

commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as, our dedication to environmental stewardship and economic sustainability. For years, we have worked to ensure that these values are at the heart of every initiative we pursue, from fostering social equity, to protecting our natural resources, to our pursuit of carbon neutrality. This certification is not the culmination of our efforts but a milestone that motivates us to continue building a more inclusive, environmentally conscious, and prosperous future for our entire community. This work would not be possible without the support of local, regional, county, state and federal partners and the vision and hard work of the Phoenixville Borough’s staff and Borough Council.”

“Sustainability requires a foundational approach that simultaneously integrates social equity, environmental stewardship, and economic development in decision-making,” said Joylette Portlock, Ph.D., Executive Director of Sustainable Pittsburgh. “Sustainable Pennsylvania provides municipal governments and stakeholders clear and recognizable sustainability objectives to share, so that they can foster thriving and vibrant communities built to last.”
