Coatesville swimmers will look to make an impact in this week’s District One meet By David Conard Sports Editor, CoatesvilleTimes.com
PHILADELPHIA—It’s that time of year again, as people everywhere start to think about spring and begin looking forward to planning day trips to the city, days lounging poolside and summer vacation, the young men and women that have spent tireless hours training in the gym and countless days of lap after lap in the pool since November, prepare to take on the best that the state has to offer.
On Thursday and Friday in the PIAA District championship will take place, with a berth at the Pennsylvania state championships to be held at Bucknell University at stake along with district glory.
When we talked to Coatesville head coach Dave Morris following a non-league meet at Perkiomen Valley, the affable leader of the Red Raiders was quick to point out that everything that happens during the long rigors of the season has a part in a plan.
That plan, according to Morris, is to get ready for the post season.
“I think there are meets when we swim tired during the season,” said Morris. “During the long season you have to choose which meets you really have to go for it. Everything is part of the plan in working toward districts and states. I am excited for the kids we have that have worked so hard and qualified for districts.”
The Coatesville boys will be led out of the gate by sophomore Trevor Gordon, who will compete in multiple events including the 500-yard freestyle and the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.39).
Meanwhile, a trio of juniors Nick Lucash (50 and 100 freestyle) Hunter Mountain (50-yard freestyle 22.69) and Logan Schul (200-yard IM, 100-yard freestyle 50.72), have all qualified for the big dance and should be a force.
Freshman Tyler Brown will be seeing his first district action in the 100-yard butterfly, while senior Steve Brown will be bringing his career for the red and black to a close as he competes in the 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard butterfly (55.13).
Coatesville will also compete in both the boy’s and girl’s 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relays.
Red Raiders junior Jesse Jordan is no stranger to multi-tasking as Jordan typically competes in four or five events in the team meets, Jordan will be the subject of our student profile, “The Red Raiders Report” next week on the CoatesvilleTimes.com.
Jordan will get to spend plenty of time in the pool at LaSalle as she anchors the 400-yard freestyle relay as well as competing in the 100-yard freestyle and the 50-yard freestyle (25.70) final and will be looking to advance to states.
