Red Raiders make impact felt at Penn Relays By Dave Conard Sports Editor, CoatesvilleTimes.com
PHILADELPHIA—Coatesville set the bar early on Thursday as the 4 x 100 led by Helen Adams won their heat, qualifying the Red Raiders for the Tri-State championships to be held on Saturday at 1:55 in event 466 at the 118th Penn Relays.
Adams and teammate Kenya Woodall were back at in the 4 x 400 along with Coatesville’s Jasmine Simpson and Mel Holl as the Red Raiders snagged the top seeded time in the Phialdelphia area championship 4 x 400 event to be held at Franklin field on Saturday at 5:15 in event 492.
The Red Raiders fueled by an outstanding third and fourth leg by Holl and Woodall, obliterated their heat , defeating Ches-Mont rival Downingtown east by seven seconds setting up the rematch for the trophy on Saturday.
“This amazing,” said Woodall after the 4 x 100. “We have all worked so hard, when I came around the turn and we were in front I was just thinking, make sure you don’t drop the baton and keep running no matter how close any one gets to me. This is a great experience and we have a great team of girls.”
Sophomore Zhane Williams had the unenviable task of making sure the race got on track out of the blocks as she had to block out the noise made by the 23,075 fans on hand just to hear the gun.
“I was just thinking, don’t false start,” said Willams. “After the race got started I was fine, no nerves really, I just wanted to make sure I handed the baton off to Layanna cleanly to give her a chance to keep the lead.”
Woodall and company will be busy on Saturday in quest of bringing home the gold from one of the nation’s grandest of all track and field events, along with sharing the infield with the best track and field athletes on the planet as USA vs. the world events take place Saturday afternoon as well in what is sure to be a mad house with upwards of 65,000 people expected to attend.
